About this work

A woman's head, wrapped in a loose white hood or shawl, tilts back with eyes closed and mouth open as if crying out or gasping. Around her, a ring of pale spherical shapes -- egg- or ball-like -- floats against solid black, with a single red sphere breaking the otherwise uniform white.

Thick, visible brushstrokes model the pale hood and flushed face against the flat black background, giving the spheres a hard, almost sculptural roundness with single bright highlights. The stark contrast of light face and dark void, plus the lone red ball among the white, creates a tense, dreamlike, faintly disquieting mood.
